This is something new I am trying, please join me for a weekly prompt and at the end of the month you will have a very homemade single page layout. I will post directions every Monday for 4 weeks. I am starting now so that we can finish by the end of the month.
This idea was inspired by Allison’s minimalist challenge for camp. Though we will use lots of stuff, the opposite of being a minimalist but still inspired by it. The minimalist challenge pushed us to be creative with minimal supplies. This challenge will push us to be creative with supplies that are not premade. We will NOT be using stickers, ephemera packs, chipboard packs or Thickers.
Week #1 - Gather one or two photos
- Find the pattern paper you would like to use and your background sheet as well.
- Start playing , how will you mat your photos with Cardstock, ink or paint. Single or double mat?
-look at your pattern paper and decide what to do to make it interesting , distress? Ink? Stencil over it or around it? A little hand stitching? , border punches? Just concentrate on matting and background this week, then post your progress and set aside. You are all set until next week.
I am posting my progress but you don’t need to copy how I laid out my pattern paper. All arrangements will work.

IMG_4717 by Gabriella B, on Flickr For my two pieces of pattern paper I used the corner rounder on top and inked. For the green sheet I wanted to add some texture so I used a handstitching tool to pierce the lines on the pattern paper , then sanded over them to make them show up. I ended with splatters of watercolor paint.

Any limits on the number of patterned papers? What ever you want. It’s as many or none as you want. If you want all mixed media, go for it. If you want 20 scraps of pp that is fine too. Just play until you get a background and photo mat the way you want it. my watercolor paint dried and it did not show up enough so i added splatters of gold since posted

Step #2 Your layout needs a title! But remember we are not using stickers, Thickers, or premade words. What we will use are die cut machines, either electric or manual, punches, stencils, stamps or even just or pens. IMG_4746 by Gabriella B, on Flickr I decided my title would be “sweet smile” so I wanted to be super creative and grabbed my stencil letters and did the yellow smile in watercolor pencils and then die cut the sweet and colored with mists. I then started moving the things around on my background. Nothing was working. My title and photo took up so much space and that there would be no room for embellies or journaling. Ugh plus I did not like Trevor’s head on the acorn paper. …..so plan two, I need a smaller title and found a die that said smile so I die cut it and used the negative space as a stencil. I used the yellowish paper to try to down down the acorn print. I re cut the sweet and used oxide inks so there was no shimmer which was I finally realized was part of the problem with the other title So there ya have it folks, hope your layout goes smoother . The goal here is to make a title and not rely on premade stuff so much. I will post step three next week in another thread
